How Much Does RV AC Repair Cost in Texas?

Published cost guides put a single-part RV AC repair between $150 and $650. That covers a capacitor, a thermostat, a fan motor or a control board. A compressor costs more: $700 to $1,400 in a national guide built from repair invoices. That guide puts a new rooftop unit at $1,400 to $2,900 installed.

So the part that failed sets the bill. A capacitor is a small repair, while a dead compressor on an older unit often means a new unit. These are published market numbers, not our price list. Finding the failed part is the first step of RV AC repair.

What does each RV AC repair cost?

The table draws on two 2026 guides. One is built from more than 500 repair invoices, and the other comes from an RV parts maker.

Thermostat$200 to $450Invoice-based guide

Each range in the invoice-based guide is the total bill, service call included. Its numbers are national and assume a mobile technician. It lists two Texas metro areas, and both run 5 to 15 percent above its national ranges.

An RV technician marketplace’s guide uses published service contract claims. It puts roof air conditioner repairs at $600 to $3,500. The low end is a diagnosis and a part, and the high end is a new unit.

What drives the price of an RV AC repair?

  • The part. A capacitor or a thermostat is a small job. The compressor is the costliest part repair in the table.
  • The unit. A 15,000 BTU unit or a heat pump model costs more. A standard unit alone runs $600 to $1,100, the parts maker’s guide says.
  • The roof. One maker’s manual lists its rooftop unit at about 86 pounds. A swap means lifting the new unit onto the roof and sealing it with a new gasket. The parts maker’s guide puts that labor at 2 to 4 hours. If the roof under the unit needs work too, see what RV roof repair costs in Texas.
  • The service call. The trip fee runs $75 to $150 in the marketplace guide and $95 to $250 in the invoice-based guide. It pays for the drive and the tools and parts on the truck. It often covers the first part of the diagnosis too, so ask. Labor runs $125 to $200 an hour in the invoice-based guide.
  • The rig and the timing. Bigger rigs take more labor, and older rigs can need extra time for corrosion or hard-to-find parts. After-hours calls typically run 1.5 to 2 times standard rates, the invoice-based guide says.

Should you repair or replace an RV air conditioner?

Most RV AC units last 8 to 15 years with proper maintenance, the parts maker’s guide says. Frequent hard starts and undersized generators push a unit toward the short end.

That guide gives a simple test. If the repair costs more than half the price of a new unit, replace the unit. It also says to replace a unit over 10 years old when its compressor fails. In the invoice-based guide, a compressor alone costs about half the price of a new 13,500 BTU unit.

A failed control board and a failed compressor can both leave you with no cold air. The board is a $200 to $500 repair in the parts maker’s guide, far less than a compressor. That gap is why the diagnosis comes before the quote.

Why do RV air conditioners struggle in Texas heat?

San Marcos averages about 117 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter, by NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals. July and August highs average in the mid 90s. In 2023, NOAA’s daily record for San Marcos shows 80 days at 100 degrees or hotter.

Air passing through a rooftop unit cools about 15 to 20 degrees, one maker’s manual says. That maker gives a test. If the RV cannot hold about 80 degrees inside, the heat coming in beats the unit’s capacity.

On hot afternoons, the compressor may run for hours without cycling off. Both makers call for cleaning the filters every two weeks while the AC is in use. A clogged filter cuts airflow and can ice the cooling coil.

On some units, a failed fan motor or a dirty coil trips a high-pressure switch that stops the compressor. Repeated trips mean the unit needs a technician, that maker’s manual says. An AC check fits into RV annual maintenance.

Both makers suggest parking in shade with the windows and doors shut. One adds a tip for extreme heat: start the AC early in the morning.

Why do power problems show up as AC repairs?

One maker’s manual says to have the power supply checked any time the AC is not working right. Each start of the compressor pulls a surge of current, often 50 to 100 amps, the parts maker’s guide says. A soft-start device cuts that surge.

After the AC shuts off, one maker says to wait two to three minutes before restarting it. Starting it sooner can trip the breaker. If the breaker keeps tripping, that maker says to have the starting and running amps checked. Faults in the shore power or the generator belong to RV electrical and generator repair.

What can you check before you call a technician?

  • Power. Check the breaker, and make sure shore power or the generator is on.
  • The thermostat. Set it to cool, below the room temperature. Some newer units wait about 3 minutes before the compressor starts.
  • The filters. Clean them if they look clogged.
  • Ice on the coil. On nights below 75 degrees, one maker says not to set the thermostat at its coolest. If the coil ices up, run the fan on high until full airflow comes back.

Call a technician when the breaker trips again after a reset, or the compressor keeps locking out. Newer units may show an error code. Note the code and the model number. Mention any other repairs on the same call, since one trip fee costs less than several.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace an RV AC unit?
A national guide built from repair invoices puts a new 13,500 BTU rooftop unit at $1,400 to $2,600 installed. A 15,000 BTU unit runs $1,600 to $2,900 in that guide. An RV parts maker's guide puts most standard rooftop replacements at $800 to $2,500 or more, all in.
Is it worth fixing an old RV air conditioner?
It depends on the part and the age of the unit. One parts maker's guide says to replace the unit when a repair costs over half of a new one. It also says to replace a unit over 10 years old when the compressor fails.
How long does an RV air conditioner last?
Most RV AC units last 8 to 15 years with proper maintenance, one RV parts maker's guide says. Frequent hard starts and undersized generators push a unit toward the short end. Two makers' manuals call for cleaning the filters every two weeks while the AC is in use.
Why does my RV AC run all day and still not cool enough?
A rooftop unit cools the air passing through it about 15 to 20 degrees, one maker's manual says. On a 97-degree afternoon, that can leave the RV warmer than you want. Parking in shade and starting the AC early in the morning both help. If the air coming out is barely cooler than the air going in, have the unit checked.
What does a mobile RV technician charge for a service call?
An RV technician marketplace's 2026 guide puts the trip fee at $75 to $150, plus $145 to $180 an hour. A national guide built from repair invoices lists $95 to $250 for the service call. The fee pays for the drive and the tools and parts on the truck. It often covers the first part of the diagnosis too.
What is the most common RV AC repair?
A failed capacitor, says a national RV repair cost guide built from repair invoices. That guide puts the full bill at $150 to $350. An RV parts maker's guide also calls it the most common failure, at $150 to $400.
