Canyon Lake sits on the Guadalupe River in the hills of northern Comal County. Its two Corps of Engineers RV campgrounds stay busy all summer, and checkout there is 2 pm. A dead air conditioner in August or a slide-out stuck open can end a lake trip early. Pulling a broken camper over the hills to a shop makes for a long, hot day.
River Cities RV Service is based in San Marcos, and Canyon Lake is part of our service area. We bring mobile RV repair to travel trailers, fifth wheels, motorhomes and campers where they sit around the lake. When a slide sticks, our RV slide-out repair happens at your site if the job allows it. Call or text (512) 850-7257 to set up the service call.
Tell us about your RV, what is wrong and where it is parked. We diagnose the problem and put the repair quote in writing.
The Corps of Engineers runs two developed campgrounds with RV sites on the lake. Potters Creek Park, on the north shore, has 93 back-in RV sites with 50-amp electric and water. Cranes Mill Park sits on a long peninsula on the southwest shore, where the Guadalupe flows into the lake. It has 30 back-in RV sites with the same hookups, and both parks stay open all year.
Camping in both parks is by reservation only, through Recreation.gov. A stay there tops out at 14 nights in a rolling 30 days. Longer stays happen at private RV parks on FM 306 and FM 2673, some of them home to full-time RVers. Joint Base San Antonio also runs a leased recreation area with RV sites for Defense Department ID holders.
On a 50-amp site, the hookup can be live while the RV sits dark. Then we trace the fault inside the RV: the power cord, the transfer switch, the converter or the batteries. The pedestal and the site wiring belong to the park.
From San Marcos, the dam is about 25 road miles away. From I-35, the Corps routes drivers west on FM 306 at exit 191, about 15 miles to the lake. TxDOT lists FM 306 at about 31.8 miles, around the north side of the lake to US 281. Potters Creek Road leaves it and runs about 2 miles south to the park.
FM 2673 leaves FM 306 near Sattler, at the light just past the first Guadalupe River crossing. It runs west through Startzville and dead-ends at Cranes Mill Park, down a steep hill at the entrance. The Handbook of Texas says Sattler and Startzville were small places that grew after the dam was finished in 1964. Canyon City took shape in the 1960s on FM 306, just below the dam.
The Census Bureau counts Canyon Lake as a census-designated place, not a city, with 31,124 people in 2020. Its survey puts the median age at 48.2, and about a third of homes date from 2010 or later. About 9 percent of homes are kept for seasonal or occasional use. If your RV waits beside a lake house between trips, its yearly service visit can happen right there.
NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for its Canyon Dam station show a long, hot summer. August highs average 95.6 degrees, and 103 days a year reach 90 or hotter. About 13 of those days hit 100. On a waterfront site in full sun, the rooftop air conditioner runs hard all afternoon.
Our RV AC repair covers the rooftop unit and its control board. When a unit is done, we replace it.
The station averages about 38 inches of rain a year, and October and May are the wettest months. In NOAA records for Comal and four nearby counties, 2000 to 2025, 87 percent of hail reports came in spring. At Potters Creek, thick oak and juniper surround the upper sites, and wind can drop limbs on a roof. After a storm, our RV roof repair covers seam sealing, leak repair, membrane repair and full roof replacement.
Winter is short, but the station still averages 18 nights a year at 32 degrees or colder. The furnace runs on propane on those nights, and an exposed water line can freeze. We repair RV furnaces and split water lines where the RV sits.
Below the dam, the Guadalupe runs past Canyon City and Sattler toward New Braunfels. River Road follows it downstream and crosses it several times, with campgrounds along the way. In summer the river draws tubers and paddlers, and in winter it draws trout anglers. Texas Parks and Wildlife planned close to 20,000 rainbow trout for this stretch in its 2025 to 2026 season.
Canyon Dam holds back floods from 1,432 square miles of drainage above it. In 2002 the lake went over the spillway for the first time and crested at 950.32 feet. That rush of water carved the 64-acre Canyon Lake Gorge. The Handbook of Texas notes flood damage in Canyon City in 1998 and 2002.
If your RV sits near the river, watch the forecast and move it early when it is safe. After a flood, water can reach the floor, the wiring, the furnace and the water heater. If you carry RV insurance, our insurance claim repairs start with the diagnosis and the write-up for your insurer. You pay the deductible, and we do the repair once the claim is approved.

Josh replaced the a/c and heater control board in my travel trailer he did an awesome job I highly recommend him
We discovered just 4 days before our Thanksgiving trip that our RV slide-out wasn’t working. We contacted Josh, and he came out the very same day to diagnose the issue. He quickly ordered the necessary parts and managed to get everything repaired in time for our trip. Josh was professional, efficient, and highly communicative throughout the entire process, keeping us informed every step of the way. His pricing is very reasonable, and we truly appreciate the extra effort he put in to ensure we were able to leave on time. Highly recommend his RV repair services!
Josh and his team are amazing. He replaced my roof on my wildcat 5th wheel. And once it rained he returned twice to assess any leaks and concerns. He’s my repair guy now! Thank you Josh!!!!
Josh was great. He answered all of my questions. He installed a new roof on my rv, it honestly looked brand new like it rolled off the factory line. He was fast and reliable! Definitely calling him back for an AC job next.
Josh helped me with my RV A/C repair in a pinch and was absolutely wonderful and professional. Without his help in replacing my A/C this summer would have been unbearable. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Y’all! I cannot say enough amazing things about River Cities RV Service. Josh was absolutely incredible and got us out a tough situation with zero AC in July in Texas. He came to Lockhart State Park where we were staying and fixed us up.
