RV AC Repair in San Marcos, TX

RV AC Repair · San Marcos, TX

For the rooftop AC that quit in the Texas heat

RV AC repair starts with what the air conditioner is doing. It may blow warm air, freeze up, trip the breaker or refuse to start. We find the cause, then put the quote for the repair in writing. In a Texas summer, a dead AC is our most common urgent call.

We work on the rooftop unit, the ceiling assembly inside, the control board and the wall thermostat. The service call comes to the RV at an RV park, a campground, a storage lot or your driveway. You can also bring it to our San Marcos shop. This work is part of our mobile RV repair in San Marcos and the towns around it.

What We Handle

  • Rooftop RV air conditioners that blow warm air or stop cooling
  • Units that hum, will not start or keep tripping the breaker
  • Iced-up cooling coils and weak airflow at the vents
  • Fan motors and other failed parts on the rooftop unit replaced
  • AC and heat control boards replaced
  • Wall thermostats and ceiling controls tested and replaced
  • Water dripping from the ceiling assembly traced to its source
  • RV AC replacement and installation when a unit is done

Why is my RV air conditioner blowing warm air?

One rooftop AC maker's manual gives a simple check. As a general rule, the air coming out runs 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the air going in. At 80 degrees going in, that means 60 to 65 coming out. When that drop holds, the manual says the unit is working properly.

When the cooling falls short, another maker's troubleshooting chart starts with the filters. A clogged filter cuts the airflow and can ice up the cooling coil. Running the AC with no filter lets lint and grease build up on the coil itself.

Past the filters, a third maker's chart lists a damaged indoor or outdoor fan. It also lists leaves and dirt blocking the grilles on the rooftop unit. We test the rooftop unit and the ceiling assembly, then put the fix in the written quote.

RV air conditioner repair in a Hill Country summer

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals put the average August high in San Marcos near 97 degrees. The city averages about 117 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. September still averages about 19 of those days, so the AC season runs through September.

One maker's manual uses 80 degrees as the normal target inside an RV. If the unit holds its 15 to 20 degree drop but the RV stays hot, the manual blames heat gain. Direct sun and big windows both add heat. Shade and shut doors help, and another maker suggests starting the AC early in the morning on the hottest days.

On a typical summer night here, the low still falls below 75 degrees. NOAA's normal low is about 73 degrees in July and 74 in August. One manual warns that below 75 outside, a thermostat set to its coldest can ice up the coil. It says to set the thermostat near the middle overnight.

RV AC replacement and installation

When a rooftop unit is done, we replace it. The written quote covers the new unit and the install before any work starts. Once you say yes, we order the unit and set a time to put it in.

A new unit has to fit the RV. Makers' installation guides set the unit on a gasket over a square roof hole about 14 inches across. The roof has to carry the weight, about 86 pounds for one maker's unit. One spec sheet sizes a 13,500 BTU unit for a 23-foot RV and 15,500 BTU for 31 feet.

One maker's guide has the bolts drawn down until the gasket is squeezed to about half its height. It warns that sliding the unit across the roof can damage the gasket and cause leaks. Water around an older unit can also come from the roof, which is RV roof repair work.

FAQ

RV AC Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about rv ac repair around San Marcos and the Hill Country. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (512) 850-7257

Can you do RV AC repair where my RV is parked?
Yes. We do RV AC repair at RV parks, campgrounds, storage lots and driveways within about 50 miles of San Marcos. That takes in the I-35 corridor and reaches the edges of Austin and San Antonio. You can also bring the RV to our San Marcos shop.
Why does my RV AC keep tripping the breaker?
One maker's manual says the compressor needs two to three minutes off before it restarts. Turn it back on sooner and it can trip the breaker. If the compressor still will not start, the manual has the power supply checked, down to the extension cord. Low voltage and shore power trouble fall under RV electrical and generator repair.
Why is water dripping from my RV air conditioner?
One maker's troubleshooting chart names two causes: clogged condensation drains and damaged seals. On humid days, another maker says parts of the unit can sweat inside the RV. Running the fan on high and keeping the doors and windows shut helps. If the drip keeps coming, call or text (512) 850-7257.
Can you replace my RV AC control board or thermostat?
Yes, and we test both before we replace either one. In one maker's ducted system, the rooftop unit's controls take 12-volt power from the converter. Its chart traces a dark control pad to an unplugged control cable or the RV's power supply. That maker's rooftop unit also switches the furnace, and RV furnace repair is part of our propane work.
How often should I clean my RV AC filters?
Two makers' manuals say every two weeks while the AC is in use. Heavy use and dusty air can mean cleaning them more often. A third maker says to replace the filters at least every 12 months. We run the air conditioner as part of every RV annual maintenance visit.
How much does RV AC repair cost?
The price turns on the fault and the parts it needs. A new control board and a new rooftop unit are very different jobs. The service call covers the diagnosis and the trip within 50 miles of San Marcos. After the diagnosis, we put the quote for the repair in writing.

We discovered just 4 days before our Thanksgiving trip that our RV slide-out wasn’t working. We contacted Josh, and he came out the very same day to diagnose the issue. He quickly ordered the necessary parts and managed to get everything repaired in time for our trip. Josh was professional, efficient, and highly communicative throughout the entire process, keeping us informed every step of the way. His pricing is very reasonable, and we truly appreciate the extra effort he put in to ensure we were able to leave on time. Highly recommend his RV repair services!

Josh and his team are amazing. He replaced my roof on my wildcat 5th wheel. And once it rained he returned twice to assess any leaks and concerns. He’s my repair guy now! Thank you Josh!!!!
