RV Suspension Repair in San Marcos, TX

Suspension Repair · San Marcos, TX

The springs and hardware that hold your trailer level

RV suspension repair covers the parts that join the axles to the frame of a travel trailer or fifth wheel. Leaf springs carry the weight and soften the bumps. Shackles, hangers, equalizers and shocks work with them. When those parts wear out, the trailer can lean or wear its tires unevenly.

River Cities RV Service does RV suspension repair where the trailer sits, or at our San Marcos shop. We come to your RV park, campground, storage lot or driveway within about 50 miles of San Marcos. This work is one part of our mobile RV repair in San Marcos and the towns around it. The service call covers the diagnosis and the trip, and the quote for the repair goes in writing.

What wears out in a travel trailer suspension?

A leaf spring is a stack of curved steel strips called leaves. U-bolts clamp it to the axle, and each end hangs from the frame. When the trailer takes weight, the spring flattens and grows longer. A swinging link called a shackle lets it stretch out.

On a trailer with two axles, an equalizer sits between the two springs on each side. An axle maker's service manual says it passes sudden loads from one axle to the other. Shock absorbers, on trailers that have them, calm the bounce after a bump.

Every pivot in this setup wears over time. Bushings in the spring eyes and the equalizer wear thin, and bolt holes stretch out of round. The same manual calls for new springs once they sag or break, and new bushings once they wear.

Signs your trailer needs RV axle repair or new springs

Park on level ground and look at the trailer from the side. A trailer that leans, or a corner that sits low, can point to a sagging or broken spring. Check the tires next. An axle maker's manual ties wear along one side of the tread to overloading or bad alignment.

Watch the trailer behind your truck, too. Axles out of line can make it run off to one side instead of following the truck. From beside the wheels, you may spot a cracked leaf or a bent shackle. The manual's schedule also lists a check of the welds where each hanger meets the frame.

The trailer's identification plate lists its rated capacity, and the same manual warns against loading past it. If you find a broken spring, call or text (512) 850-7257 before you hitch up. If a hard hit also damaged the body, our body specialist handles RV body and collision repair.

RV suspension repair along the I-35 corridor and in the Hill Country

Our customers include full-time RVers in the area's RV parks and travelers passing through on I-35 and I-10. A broken spring can stop a trip at a campground or an RV park. We come to the trailer across our service area, from Kyle and Buda south to New Braunfels and Seguin.

Suspension work starts with the trailer raised by its frame. An axle maker's service manual says to support it on rated jack stands, never on the axle or the springs. If a trailer cannot be fixed where it sits, a towing company can bring it to our San Marcos shop.

A trailer that sat for months in an RV park or a storage lot needs a look before it rolls. The same manual's after-storage steps cover the suspension and the tightness of its bolts. We do that check on the service call and put any repair in a written quote.

FAQ

Suspension Repair Questions, Answered

Common questions about suspension repair around San Marcos and the Hill Country. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (512) 850-7257

How much does RV suspension repair cost?
The price depends on which parts failed and how many. A worn shackle is a smaller job than new springs on both axles. The service call covers the diagnosis and the trip within about 50 miles of San Marcos. After the diagnosis, we put the quote for the repair in writing.
If one spring broke, do I need to replace all of them?
Not always, but we check every spring when one breaks. The others have carried the same load for the same miles. A new spring beside a sagging one can leave the trailer out of level. The written quote shows what we found on each spring.
Can you align the axles on a travel trailer or fifth wheel?
Yes, we make alignment adjustments on travel trailers and fifth wheels. On a fifth wheel, an axle maker's manual says to measure from the kingpin to each end of each axle. The two numbers for each axle should match within 1/16 inch. The same manual adds that a wear pattern, once set in a tire, is hard to stop.
How often should a trailer suspension be checked?
An axle maker's service manual says to look over the suspension at least every 6,000 miles. It also calls for grease every 3,000 miles on bolts and equalizers that have grease fittings. The tire check in RV annual maintenance can flag wear that points back to the axles.
Can you fix a broken trailer spring at my RV park?
Yes. We come to the trailer at RV parks, campgrounds, storage lots and homes. When a repair needs parts, we order them and come back to finish the job. Call or text (512) 850-7257 and tell us where the trailer sits.
Will insurance cover suspension damage?
That depends on your policy and on what caused the damage. The insurer decides what it covers. We handle the on-site diagnosis and the write-up for the claim. See how RV warranty and insurance repairs run with us, from the submission to the deductible.

Dustin Wied8 months ago · Google review

We discovered just 4 days before our Thanksgiving trip that our RV slide-out wasn’t working. We contacted Josh, and he came out the very same day to diagnose the issue. He quickly ordered the necessary parts and managed to get everything repaired in time for our trip. Josh was professional, efficient, and highly communicative throughout the entire process, keeping us informed every step of the way. His pricing is very reasonable, and we truly appreciate the extra effort he put in to ensure we were able to leave on time. Highly recommend his RV repair services!

Josh and his team are amazing. He replaced my roof on my wildcat 5th wheel. And once it rained he returned twice to assess any leaks and concerns. He’s my repair guy now! Thank you Josh!!!!
